CTS Premier Coach
“My coaching philosophy centers on providing world class basics of physiological, tactical and technical development, grounded in hard work, utilizing the latest training trends and innovation. Whether it’s road, track or mountain biking, my strengths lay in my experience to collaborate with athletes to identify event demands, personal demands, and performance gaps, to then craft and communicate a plan to achieve goal performances. Coaching any athlete requires a delicate balance of appropriate physical loading against recovery that is often comprised of high achieving individuals. As a coach, my job is to ensure athletes find the right balance between both and has fun along the way.”
After retiring from competitive cycling with the New Zealand national road and track teams in 1989, I relocated to Colorado Springs for a coaching position with USA Cycling. While coaching Olympic level athletes was not a career I had set out for, the challenge and satisfaction of helping athletes pursue and attain their dreams became more fulfilling than competing. Thirty years, 7 Olympic and Paralympic Games, and over 50 Olympic, World Championship and Paralympic medalists later (not to mention a couple of grand tour stages) I still have the same passion to help athletes of all levels reach their goals. When I’m not traveling and coaching athletes, I ride my mountain bike on the trails around Colorado Springs and support my twin daughters in their endeavors to play college golf and volleyball.
