About The Coach
“My coaching philosophy is based on the notion of “first who, then what.” For me,
having a deep understanding of who an athlete is – where they are from, what their
influences are, how they’ve evolved — forms the basis of what I do with that athlete and
how their program evolves over time. Building upon the virtues of that strong
relationship, I then mold the athlete’s training around their goals and objectives as well
as providing a sense of balance with the rest of their lives.”
I began running ultramarathons in 1992 and subsequently began coaching endurance
runners in 2009. I have been with CTS since 2016. In addition to my work as an
ultrarunning coach I am also a podcast host, livestream commentator and a columnist
with irunfar.com. I am the proud father of three active sons and as such, I have a
particular affinity for those athletes attempting to juggle endurance training with the
challenges and stresses of a busy work/family life. Additionally, I enjoy working with
more “seasoned” athletes who want to continue running far into the future. Finally, I
underwent bilateral hip replacement surgery in 2023 and have become somewhat of an
expert in running ultras after hip replacement.
I have been running ultramarathons since 1992. I ran my first 100 miler in 2000 and
have, to date, completed 41 100 mile races, including 10 finishes at Western States, 2
finishes at Hardrock and a finish at Cocodona. I am a former educator, husband to my
wife Shelly for 34 years and the father of three great boys Carson, Logan, and Tully.
