Chasing big goals with Coach Ryne
I reached out to Coach Ryne after surprising myself with decent results at the 2024 UTMB Canyons 50k and found myself with an auto-entry into UTMB’s OCC 55k in 2025. I knew I needed a coach to take on OCC in a way I would feel proud of. For context, I tend to take any training and athletics seriously since I come from a D1 collegiate softball background and am currently enrolled as an exercise science doctoral student. With about five years of running under my belt and a tendency to push myself a little too hard, I reached out to Ryne for more guidance in the art of trail running. We have worked together for about 5 months now, and we have learned a lot about my physiology, psychology, and logistics management and identified clear areas of improvement. Plus, Ryne is from the southeast and brings that southern Appalachian twang and understanding that I need for my training, aka understanding the heat, humidity, and technicality of the WNC region. Lastly, Ryne takes the position as a guide and a pal. He does a great job balancing the science, the subjective, and everyday life.
