Time-Crunched Cyclist Training
Train Smarter and Get faster, in 6 hours per week

Limited training time doesn't have to prevent you from achieving your cycling goals. In fact, cyclists who only have 6-8 hours per week to train have some advantages over higher-volume athletes.
Unlocking your performance is a matter of embracing the "Time-Crunched Cyclist" identity and taking advantage of strategies that leverage shorter workouts, focused intensity, and periodization plans that match your lifestyle.
CTS wrote the book on training for time-crunched cyclists, literally. Across three editions of "The Time-Crunched Cyclist" book, coaches Chris Carmichael and Jim Rutberg established a proven framework for optimizing performance for cyclists with limited time available for training.
What Should Time-Crunched Cyclists Focus On?
There are no shortcuts in endurance training but there are many pathways to the same destination. When cyclists have less time available for training, we manipulate the basic principles of training (overload, progression, specificity, individualization, reversibility) to accumulate greater workload in less time, take advantage of increased recovery time between sessions, and organize training so you achieve the fitness necessary to achieve your goals.
For Time-Crunched Cyclists, a few areas become increasingly important:
Leverage Intensity
Workload is the product of intensity and duration. With less overall training time available, cyclists must intelligently leverage higher intensities to accumulate sufficient workload.
Prioritize Conditioning
Leveraging intensity doesn't mean ignoring Zone 2. Aerobic base training is still crucial, but for Time-Crunched Cyclists we need to get a bit creative to schedule concentrated Zone 2 time for meaningful progress.
Build and Maintain Strength
Maintaining muscle mass, strength, and bone health are important even when you have limited training time. Fortunately, there are time-efficient strength-training methods that fit your tight schedule.
Stay Consistent
With fewer weekly training hours, each workout matters. Consistency is critical, so Time-Crunched Cyclist need strategies to integrate training into busy lifestyles to avoid or compensate for missed workouts.

We've proven it with tens of thousands of cyclists.
The majority of age-group cyclists going to group rides and competing in local, regional, and even national level competitions, can ride strong, feel confident, and ride shoulder to shoulder with cyclists training twice as many hours, or more. Weekly training hours are only one part of the equation when it comes to developing fitness and preparing for high performance.
What you do with your limited training hours matters. Time-Crunched Cyclist concepts don't just scale down traditional training methods. They turn a perceived disadvantage (too little time) into an actionable plan that creates the fitness, power, and stamina to achieve your cycling goals.
