Jim Rutberg

About Me

I’ve been a full-time professional coach since 1999, and an endurance athlete for much longer. I have a BS in Exercise Physiology from Wake Forest, and I was an elite amateur bike racer in the late 1990s. In addition to coaching I’ve co-authored seven books on training and sports nutrition, including “The Time-Crunched Cyclist”, and produced more than 20 full-length indoor cycling videos. Currently my own training focuses on being fit for training camps and ultra-distance cycling events like the Dirty Kanza 200 and the Leadville 100 mountain bike race. And at home I’m happiest playing with my two young boys, preparing fresh vegetarian and vegan meals with my wife, and tinkering in the garage.


I believe in full-service coaching that delivers a lot more value than just a training plan and data analysis. I care about how you are, not just the workouts you’ve done, and I make the successful integration of training, nutrition, career, and lifestyle a top priority. My coaching education and experience means I’ve achieved success working with a wide range of athletes. Due to my other role as Media Director for CTS I keep my athlete load very low at the moment and am mostly available for Time-Crunched Athlete consultations.


In my role as a CTS Coach, I’m an expert in personal coaching, training camps, private camps, race strategy, race-day support crew, weight management, and nutrition strategy. I’m also very good at motivating stubborn procrastinators.
