Learn the Essential MTB Skills and Become a Smooth, Confident Rider

The big picture is that the Level 1 course is designed for the more beginner level rider who has spent some time riding mountain bikes on their own already but needs development in the foundation skills to help them feel more confident and capable on the bike. During the level 1 course, we focus a lot on body position, developing a greater range of motion over the bike, and creating more bike/body separation. Beginner riders are often only comfortable in a fairly rigid position on the bike, so increasing comfort with bike/body separation allows riders to be more playful, stable in a variety of situations, and confident.

We also focus on the operation of controls, doing a lot of specific braking drills and learning how/why to adjust ration of front/rear braking. The level 1 course also gets into the basics of how to tackle obstacles you may encounter in the trail by working on wheel lifts (front, rear, both) to lift or unweight wheels over logs, rocks, steps, drop-offs, etc. We also cover cornering basics by focusing on angulation, body position, and rotation.

In addition to the MTB camps that are on the public calendar, we also do private instruction for individuals or groups. Those can have custom dates and curriculum based on your needs. More info on that here.

Camp Itinerary

DAY 1

CHECK-IN AND FIRST SKILLS SESSION

Check-in Time: 8:00 AM

Where: CTS Brevard, 11 Mama’s Way Suite B, Pisgah Forest NC

Description: Arrive at 8:00 AM prepared to ride. The first day will be broken up into two sessions. During the morning session the group will cover the first two essentials of successful, fun and safe mountain bike riding. Those being Position and Balance and Operation of Controls. While sounding very basic these are the essential components of building skills and understanding maneuvers off road. Once we have thoroughly worked up an appetite we will dine on local foods and fuel up for the afternoon ride. During the lunch break, we will be performing a lecture on nutrition and how it can impact the skills needed during a ride in the woods.
For the afternoon ride, we will do a fast warm up and review of the morning skills. Following the warm up and review we will head out on the trail and apply the morning skills.

Lunch: Along the Trail @12:30PM

DAY 2

SKILLS SESSION AND TRAIL RIDE

Description: Day two of the mountain bike skills camp will take day one and build on what was learned adding the next component of successful off road riding; Terrain Awareness.
The afternoon session is all about putting the weekend together. More trail riding will be involved but with less stopping to work on sections and more linking parts of the trail together. After ripping down the final descent we will smoothly ride sections that used to cause us trouble. But most of all we will have FUN!

Lunch: Along the Trail @ 12:30PM

Camp Conclusion: Camp will conclude Sunday afternoon after our final ride at 4 PM.

If you are shipping your bike, please make sure it arrives at CTS at least one day before your camp start date so we can have it built and prepped in time for camp.

After you sign up, please let the camp manager know if you would like us to pack your bike for shipping at the conclusion of the camp, we will do it free of charge.
