CTS Santa Ynez is pleased to announce the Women’s Spring Training Camp, which be held at the same time as the open Santa Ynez Spring Training Camp. If you’ve ever wanted to attend an instructional cycling camp but prefer the camaraderie of an “all woman” learning environment, then this is YOUR camp! 

What makes the Women’s Camp unique?

The women’s camp will feature friendly rides that incorporate instruction but not necessarily structured interval workouts. Off the bike we’ll have a schedule of additional social, training, and educational experiences. And as you ride with out top female coach(es), you’ll accomplish the following:

  • Improved bike handling skills-including safe and efficient starting and braking techniques,   balance through track standing and “slow” riding as well as basic/advanced skills in cornering.
  • Safe and “energy sparing” group riding skills through drafting and various forms of pace-lining
  • Improved confidence, riding efficiency and enjoyment by learning and practicing the finer points of climbing and descending techniques
  • Better eating habits on and off the bike to enhance cycling performance and recovery specific to women including weight management tips
  • Better understanding of the role that macro and micronutrients (carbs, fats, proteins, vitamins and minerals) play specific to women’s metabolism
  • How to keep your bike clean and fast as well as quickly changing a front and rear flat

So whether you’re a beginner or intermediate female cyclist, you’ll find what you’re looking for with this camp to become a more knowledgeable and proficient cyclist.

Location:

This camp will be run out of the CTS-Santa Ynez regional training center. This camp includes a heavy focus on early spring training rides and concludes with the challenging ‘Stinger’ ride.   

This camp is open to riders of all levels. Rides carry you through some of the Santa Ynez Valley’s finest roads, described by Chris Carmichael as “spectacular” and “some of the best riding in North America.”  You will pass through rolling terrain, along streams, through vineyards and horse farms, and conclude the week by participating in the Solvang Century. 

Santa Ynez is a small town located in Santa Barbara County, near the Los Padres National Forest and just inland from the coast of the Pacific Ocean.  Quiet roads and beautiful scenery await the cyclist who is ready to get back out on the bike for the 2013 season. The area is not only famous for its abundant riding routes, but is well known for great restaurants, galleries, country inns and exceptional wine tasting rooms.

The weather during March can vary from 50-80 degrees with the occasional spring rain shower.  Please come prepared to ride in all weather conditions.

We recommend you arrive by 1pm on Monday, March 18th, 2012.  Powertap installation and camp registration will be from 2:00pm-5pm on Monday, March 18th.  You must provide your own transportation to Santa Ynez.  The conclusion of the camp will be Saturday, March 23rd, after the final dinner.

Due to the nature of this camp, and for the safety of all of the athletes and staff, time trial bikes and aero bars are not allowed for this camp. Your bike must be equipped with a standard set of road bars and brake levers. If you have questions about your bike setup, please contact the camp manager.

Santa Barbara Airport (SBA) is the closest airport to Santa Ynez and the Training Camp.

LAX is approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes from Santa Ynez (allow more time during high traffic periods)

  • Clean bicycle, tuned and ready to ride
  • Helmet
  • Jerseys at least 4 (short and or long sleeve)
  • Shorts at least 4 pair
  • Wind Vest
  • Base layer 1 or 2 lightweight
  • Rain Jacket
  • Arm Warmers
  • Socks
  • Cycling gloves short finger
  • Cycling Shoes/pedals (carry these with you if traveling by plane)
  • Eyewear/sunglasses
  • Chamois cream
  • Small tote or backpack for anything you wish to keep in support vehicles.
  • Heart Rate Monitor and/or Power Meter (Power Tap or SRM or other)
  • Sunscreen
  • Toiletries for clean up between rides.

Other items to consider:

  • 12-27 or 12-25 cassette – If you are not accustomed to climbing, are a beginner cyclists or are attending a climbing camp.          
  • Bottles/mix/food – if you will be arriving before a camp begins or remaining afterward, and wish to ride, please bring what food/drink supplies you will need for your riding.

We will have sport drinks, food, spare tubes/tires, etc in our follow vehicles.  Each day we will prepare water bottles for your bike using GU Electrolyte Brew, and will provide you with GU Energy products for use during the camp.

Women’s Spring Training Camp

Itinerary

 

Monday, March 18th
2:00-5:00pm Arrive during this time to CTS Santa Ynez office for pre-Registration and bike drop off. Join the CTS coaching staff and fellow riders for dinner and introductions
Tuesday, March 19th
Arrive prepared to ride and start the week off with a 2.5-3 hour “leg opener” through the Santa Ynez Valley while addressing bike handling skills, followed by lunch provided by CTS.  Then spend the afternoon discussing recovery techniques and participating in a yoga class.  End the day with fellow riders and sharing the day’s events at the CTS provided dinner.
Wednesday, March 20th
Today during your 2.5-3 hour ride through the beautiful Santa Ynez countryside, discover and practice the finer points to riding in a group.  Lunch (provided by CTS) follows this session. Then for the afternoon, you have the option of enjoying a relaxing and rejuvenating massage (additional fee) or exploring the old world European charm of neighboring Solvang for shopping and “wine sipping”.  End the day with dinner on your own.
Thursday, March 21st
As we reach the midway point in your camp, during your 2.5.-3 hour ride today you’ll prepare for Saturday’s “ultimate” ride by practicing and improving your climbing and descending skills. After lunch we’ll have an afternoon presentation on current nutrition practices, specifically for women, to enhance health, fitness and cycling performance.  Bring your questions!  Then get together with your new friends for dinner on your own.
Friday, March 22nd
Today’s ride focuses on a leisurely recovery “spin” to a “tasty” destination. Reward yourself for all your hours in the saddle this week by dining on a sumptuous lunch at a local vineyard and if you choose, sampling some of their delicious libations.  Later that afternoon, join our CTS mechanic for tips on how to keep your bike running smoothly and how to change your own flats!  Reconvene with your riding buddies in the evening with dinner provided by CTS.
Saturday, March 23rd
The “Day” has finally arrived and you are ready… to experience the “Stinger”! Now you’ll utilize your refined cycling skills on this long endurance ride as you climb past vineyards culminating with one of the best views in the valley. Lunch is provided following this exhilarating ride.  Then end the evening with your friends sharing your week of cycling stories over dinner provided by CTS and vowing to get together next year, same time, same place
