I moved from playing football in middle school, to basketball in high school, to riding my bike. I entered my first race as a junior, lead from the start and won, and figured I was better at that than whatever else I was doing at the time. |
I get really excited about coaching mountain bikers, particularly gravity riders, but cycling in general is definitely my specialty. I enjoy the cold, hard, self-evaluation aspect of racing, so I love getting to coach racers. |
While I like being able to look at ride data, particularly training data over time, and tend to geek out about it a bit, there is so much more to coaching that is required to be successful. I do my best to work with my athletes to accommodate their schedules, and work around the other stresses in their lives, and I always hope that what I’ve given them will be achievable. That being said, when I do put a lot of effort into personalizing workouts, I expect that my athletes work equally hard towards their goals. Overall, I look at the big picture of an athlete’s life, then narrow down to their riding/racing goals, and then get into the details of what they will need to reach those goals; everything from bikes and mechanical advantages, to nutrition, to training, to sleep patterns. |
Attention to the details of their lives, lots of communication, and a training plan that truly matches their abilities and needs. |
I’m working on it. I think all of my athletes are distinguished. |
XC MTB, Downhill MTB, Cyclocross, beach volleyball. |
2 time member of the National Championship winning Brevard College Cycling Team. |
The hope that every race is going to be the best of my life and that everything will come together on that one day and I will be unbeatable. That and beating the other guy. |
I’ve always thought it would be awesome to be a professional soccer player. Don’t see it happening though. |
Racing downhill at Collegiate Nationals in 2010. |
Racing for 4 years for Brevard College. Seriously, if you are college aged, or know a rider who is or will be shortly, collegiate racing is the best time you can have on a bike. |
In the fall of 2009 I was coming off of my best season ever, and had never been stronger on the bike. I was at collegiate nationals in Lake Tahoe, CA, and expected to be able to get a podium in the cross country and short track races. I was racing at (semi) altitude for the first time, went out WAY too hard, and never was able to recover. I ended up about an hour behind the winner. Lesson learned: don’t go out too hard at altitude and don’t under-estimate the competition at the national level. |
I generally come into a race pretty amped up and ready to go. If I’m not feeling the motivation already flowing through me, I’ll listen to some good music and visualize the racing that I’m about to do. |
Well, I like working on bikes, but that’s also cycling related. Something not cycling related? Playing the guitar or doing heavy-duty landscape design is always fun. |
The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Good reads. |
As a coach, I probably shouldn’t say this, but for me, nothing beats a bag of Sour Patch Kids and a Dr. Pepper. Also, I’m a sucker for a good Reuben. |
Right after a ride, a bowl of cereal. The bigger meal that follows? A burrito from Chipotle or Mammacita’s. |
Most likely New Zealand. Or Italy. |
I’ve got a thing for a nice watch. I own quite a few and am always looking for more. |
Wheelie, yes. My manualing skills need work though. |
