Coaching Background

I decided to pursue training and education as a coach because:

Coaching allows me to share my passion for endurance sports with athletes that have a similar mindset. Having a positive affect on my athlete’s lives and seeing results on the race course have been one of the most rewarding feelings I have experienced. Two words….Dream Job!

I decided to join CTS because:

CTS is the market leader in coaching services. They have gotten to where they are with a solid science-based methodology that has proven itself at the highest levels. Being a part of that gives me the opportunity to learn from the best and apply it to my athletes.

My coaching philosophy is:

Physical training can be pretty straight forward. Mental training is just as or sometimes more of a factor than physical preparation. My philosophy is to prepare my athletes physically (the easy part) while constantly being aware of mental strengths and weaknesses. Helping my athletes keep focused, motivated, and “mentally fit” while still keeping it fun is a big priority to me.

My coaching goals:

To constantly keep learning. If my skills and knowledge as a coach are ever the same as it was in a previous month, then I have not met my goal.

My proudest moment as a coach:

Every time I get a call or email from an athlete that has just accomplished something extraordinary. A person’s first 5k finish is just as big a deal as qualifying for the World Championships is to another person. I enjoy them both equally.

My area of coaching expertise is:

Road and MTB cycling, Running, and Triathlon

My strongest coaching quality is:

Fun to work with while still getting the job done.

Athletic Career Highlights

When I started cycling and what got me started:

On an ordinary day one spring when I was about 6 years old, my Dad bought me a bike out of the blue. I never looked back since then. That bike turned into a BMX bike that I rode in competitions, which turned in to a mountain bike that I raced, which turned into a road bike which currently shares competition time with my mountain bike.

Athletic accomplishments

Racing for over 20 years without any major injuries

24 Hours of Adrenalin MTB race (2nd place)

Ironman Austria finisher

My near and far-term athletic goals:

To finish another Ironman race with my kids at the finish line—just like in all the Ironman videos that I watch when on the indoor trainer!

Miscellaneous

When I’m not coaching or training I like to:

Hang out with wife and kids!

I can be characterized as:

Fun to be around

Something non sports related that no one would guess about me:

I can be seen running next to Lance Armstrong on the Alpe d’Huez during the 2003 Tour  De France DVD.  (ok, that was sports related but I bet you didn’t guess that about me)

My favorite place in the world is:

Tuscany

When traveling, I never leave without:

My camera

In my car you’ll find:

50% locker room, 50% daycare

In 2020, I plan to be:

A husband and father to “baby the sequel”, and a CTS coach

The best small bit of advice I can give is:

There is a positive and negative way to look at and react to EVERY situation. The choice of how to react is yours to make.

Hobbies and interests:

Traveling, camping, snowboarding, hiking, (most anything done outdoors)
