Camp Description

CTS-Santa Ynez Tri School is based out of the picturesque and exclusive Dunn School in Los Olivos, CA and promises to be our best Triathlon Camp yet in 2017.  Athletes will stay on campus with all meals prepared in-house at a private dining facility.  Swim sessions and track sessions are a short walk from athlete housing, and the riding is on the roads of the surrounding Santa Ynez Valley.  CTS Coaches are at your side every step of the way through your stay at Tri-School, and you will share the experience with other athletes in this “Olympic Training Center style environment.”

Every day includes a coached swim session in our outdoor lap pool, with the beautiful Santa Ynez Mountains serving as a backdrop.  Camp will include a swim-video analysis allowing coaches to break down technique and form with the athlete to create more efficiency in the water.

Each day will also include challenging cycling or running sessions including lots of volume and an appropriate mix of intensity.  Athletes will perform a powered based Field Test on the bike to obtain training ranges.  We will be working on run and swim technique throughout the camp, as well as providing daily lectures on a host of triathlon related topics. 

The week culminates with the CTS Race Simulation, with distances and courses based on the athlete and their upcoming race goals.

Tri-School will benefit athletes who race across all distances, from the most advanced competitors to the novice triathlete.  Join us for an inspiring week of tough training and the opportunity to learn from some of the best coaches in the sport.

Santa Ynez, CA

The CTS-SYZ Training Center is in Santa Ynez, CA, a small town located in Santa Barbara County, near the Los Padres National Forest and just inland from the coast of the Pacific Ocean.  Tri-School is hosted at a beautiful private-school just up the road in Los Olivos, CA.  In addition to a quite campus with lodging, dining, swimming and running facilities, the area holds a bounty of great riding roads with low traffic and beautiful scenery.   The area is not only famous as a great training destination, but is well known for great restaurants, galleries, country inns and exceptional wine tasting rooms.

The weather during June can vary from 50-90 degrees with cool mornings/evenings and warm days.  Be prepared to train in a wide range of temperatures.

Day Schedule
Tuesday Welcome to CTS Santa Ynez Tri School!  Tuesday is move in day for our Athletes.  You’ll arrive and explore the Tri School Campus and check into your rooms.  Coaches and Staff will be milling around to greet you and your bike gets dropped off for check in with one of our mechanics.  We’ll have a team dinner to meet the coaches and staff in the main dining hall.
Wednesday We’ll roll easy through our beautiful valley to our Field Test Course.  There you’ll receive instruction on how to perform the Field Test and will launch to threshold and beyond to establish ranges we’ll use for the rest of camp.  When testing is complete we’ll continue our ride back to the Tri School Campus and work on triathlon specific bike and transition skills. We’ll break for lunch and you’ll spend time with your coach review the morning’s Field Test Data.  Performing in the correct power ranges is a critical art to master in triathlons.  The coaches will help you dial in ranges to leave you running successfully off the bike.In the afternoon we head to the pool for swim technique and individual swim stroke video analysis.   Dinner is provided in our dining hall along with evening lecture.  
Thursday This morning you’re put through the paces by the coaches for a real track session. After performing a Field Test you’ll be instructed on a track workout to increase pace.  We’ll be doing video work and adjusting running form and stride as we go.  This is a doozy!  After lunch, we will ride some endurance miles, preview the CTS Time Trial Course and test out ranges set forth by yesterday’s Field Test.  There’s much to learn by riding in set ranges.  This will be an adjustment and a new way of thinking for many.  We’ll have an option pre-dinner swim for anyone looking for an extra time in pool.  Dinner and lectures in the dining hall wrap up your day
Friday Transitions this morning! We’ll spend time mastering the art of T2 with a series of bike to run intervals.  It’s a challenging morning!  After lunch we are back to the pool for technique practice and speed work.  Later, we will take a field trip to our Santa Ynez training center for a tour and lecture before dining at one of our favorite Santa Ynez restaurants.
Saturday Saturday begins on the bikes riding endurance miles and shaking the legs out for tomorrow’s CTS Race Sim. Saturday afternoon is spent in the pool spending time on open water techniques.  Buoy turns, sighting, and drafting are all covered in this session.   After dinner we will discuss race day preparations and have a coaches Q&A panel.
Sunday CTS Race Sim!  We’ll have a course set for you and send you off to practice the things you learned along your way this week. It’s a simulated race against yourself and others! The afternoon concludes with a chance to review the data from the morning’s workout before packing and goodbyes as Tri School is a wrap.

Registration/Cancellations

A non-refundable $750.00 deposit is due at time of registration. The remaining balance is due 30 days prior to the camp and will be billed automatically. The credit card information used for your deposit will be billed unless otherwise arranged with the CTS accounting department.

Arrival/Departure

We recommend you arrive by Tuesday, June 06, 2017 . Camp registration will be from 2:00-5:30 pm Tuesday, June 06, 2017 . You must provide your own transportation. The conclusion of the camp will be Sunday, June 11, 2017.

Bike Transport and Assembly

If you are shipping your bike, please make sure it arrives at CTS or your hotel by Tuesday, June 06, 2017.

What to Bring

Items to pack for any of our cycling camps:

  • Bicycle: Clean, tuned and ready to ride
  • Gearing: Your bike should have a 12-27 cassette and/or a compact crankset.
  • Helmet
  • Jerseys: at least 4 (short and or long sleeve)
  • Shorts: at least 4 pair
  • Wind Vest
  • Baselayer : 1 or 2 lightweight
  • Rain Jacket
  • Arm Warmers
  • Socks
  • Cycling gloves: short finger
  • Cycling Shoes/pedals (carry these with you if traveling by plane)
  • Eyewear/sunglasses
  • Chamois cream
  • Small tote or backpack for anything you wish to keep in support vehicles.
  • Heart Rate Monitor and/or Power Meter (Power Tap or SRM or other)
  • Sunscreen
  • Toiletries for clean up between rides.

Items to add just in case

  • Light jacket
  • Medium weight jacket
  • Long sleeve and/or thermal jersey
  • Long finger gloves
  • Shoe covers/booties
  • Leg or knee warmers or light tights

Other items to consider:

  • 12-27 or 12-25 cassette – If you are not accustomed to climbing, are a beginner cyclists or are attending a climbing camp.
  • Bottles/mix/food – if you will be arriving before a camp begins or remaining afterward, and wish to ride, please bring what food/drink supplies you will need for your riding.

We will have sport drinks, food, spare tubes/tires, etc in our follow vehicles.  Each day we will prepare waterbottles for your bike using Bonk Breaker Nutrition and will provide you with sports nutrition products for use during the camp.

Items to pack for High-Altitude Ultrarunning Camp:

Weather along the Front Range is notorious for changing in an instant. Please keep track of the weather forecast and bring appropriate clothing. This camp is fully supported with Bonk Breaker and Carb Boom nutrition products. If you require something different, please bring it! Be prepared to run unsupported for up to 3 hours. The following items are a sample list of what you will need

  • Trail running shoes (duh)
  • Hat
  • Sunscreen
  • Small day bag or drop bag
  • Hydration system (handheld bottles or hydration pack)
  • GPS or training watch
  • Light rain jacket
  • Gloves
