With the growing popularity of endurance mountain bike events, more and more athletes are gravitating toward the trails. For many athletes, your aerobic fitness is greater than your technical skill or confidence on singletrack. Or perhaps you’re fine with 2-hour loops near town, but not all-day epic rides in remote areas. This camp is designed to prepare you for the physiological, technical, and strategic challenges posed by endurance mountain bike events and competitions.
As with all CTS Camps, the Epic Mountain Bike Camp will be more than a series of coach-led group rides. We’ve designed an intensive learning and “dawn-to-dusk” training experience for you. We will be riding long distances on great trails, and stopping to teach you skills that will make you faster, more confident, and more efficient on the trails. We will also shoot and analyze video of your trail riding to help you see and visualize opportunities for improvement.
GI problems are the leading cause of DNFs in ultraendurance racing, so perhaps most important of all, we’re going to work with you on your endurance mountain bike nutrition strategy. How, what, and when you eat during mountain bike stage races and 100-milers has a huge impact on your performance. You not only need a nutrition strategy; you also need to learn how to “go off script” and recover from a nutrition or hydration crisis.
This camp will be held in Breckenridge, Colorado, one of the top mountain biking destinations in the US. Situated at 8800 feet above sea level and featuring a wide variety of terrains, Breckenridge is the perfect place for the CTS Epic Mountain Bike Camp. This is the home of the six-day Breck Epic Stage Race, the almost-entirely-singletrack Breck 100, and the Firecracker 50. And when you get back into town, Breckenridge is one of the premier resort towns in the Rocky Mountains, packed with award-winning restaurants, shops, and services.
|Wednesday||Once you arrive in beautiful Breckenridge, we’ll introduce you to your coaches for the camp and then we’ll all head into town for a great team dinner. Tonight we’ll also have a presentation on “Hydration and Nutrition for Epic Performance”.|
|Thursday||We’re going to get together at 7:30 for coffee and a route overview, and then hit the trails! Today’s 4- to 5-hour ride will feature sections of the Breck100 and Firecracker 50 racecourses, and we’ll cover about 30 miles with 3,000-4,000 feet of climbing. One of the focuses for the day will be skills and descending, so we’ll be doing a skills session and video analysis today. Following lunch there will be a presentation on “Mountain Bike Training with a Power Meter” and then some recovery time before you head out to the local restaurant of your choice.|
|Friday||Today’s going to be a big day, so we’re starting early with coffee and a route overview at 7:00am. We’ll be on the bikes for 5-6 hours, and the route features the infamous Colorado Trail section of the Breck Epic and sections of the Breck 100. Overall we’ll cover 40-50 miles with 5,500 to 6,500 feet of climbing. Following lunch we’ll get together to review the analysis videos from yesterday’s ride. And we’ll end the day with a great team dinner in Breckenridge. Tonight you’ll want to get in bed early, so you have energy for tomorrow!|
|Saturday||We saved the best and biggest ride for last! We’ll start early again with coffee and route overview at 7:00am, before hitting the trails for a 5-6 hour ride. Today’s route will feature parts of both the Breck Epic and Breck100 racecourses, and a few extra surprises! Overall we’ll cover 45-55 miles with 6,000 to 7,000 feet of climbing. It’ll be a blast, but you’ll be happily exhausted by the time we pull back into town. Following the ride, we’ll swap stories over a final lunch.|

Everyone loves riding new trails, but hates spending the day route-finding. We'll show you the best trails, teach you to be a smoother and faster rider, and support you every step of the way. You should be proficient with basic mountain bike skills, but you don't need to be a racer or a rider who lives for big drops. This is a cross-country MTB camp where you'll learn to go uphill faster and downhill with confidence.
