Epic Endurance Cycling Camp – Santa Ynez

Camp Description

If you’ve signed up for an epic cycling event in 2015, you better show up prepared. This training camp is designed to stretch your limits; it’s a three day road cycling training block that will push your fitness to a new level.  Whether you’re targeting a multi-day CTS Bucket List event like the Amgen Tour of California Race Experience or a 1-day challenge like the Dirty Kanza 200, this camp is your opportunity to put the necessary miles in your legs. And even if you’re not doing a CTS Bucket List Event, this is a great training experience for anyone preparing for a major cycling challenge!

You can’t hide poor fitness on multi-day rides or even huge 1-day events.  And poor group riding skills and bike handling will compound any weaknesses.  Improve your fitness and your skills with 3 long days of riding under the guidance of CTS coaches.  The beautiful and challenging roads of the Santa Ynez Valley will test the fitness of any cyclist.  And our professional coaches provide feedback and instruction to improve skills and hone performance.  Fully supported rides, professional mechanics and daily power file analysis complete the experience at our first ever Epic Endurance Training Camp.

Wonder if you’re qualified for a CTS Bucket List Event? The best way to earn your spot on one of our teams is to spend time working with our coaches.  This three-and-a half day camp welcomes intermediate to advanced riders looking for long training days and professional instruction.  Due to the demanding nature of the routes, we highly recommend that your bicycle be equipped with a 12-28 cassette, and/or a compact crankset.

What athletes have said about this camp:

“Just spent 3 days with Carmichael Training System in Santa Ynez. Three days- 300 miles 15000 feet of climbing. 17 strong riders, great weather and awesome coaches. Thanks to Jason Siegle who pushed me, Julia who helped me screw my head on, Paul who kept me in the game, Matt and Dave Sheek who helped keep me moving, and my own Coach Kirk Nordgren whose guidance made it possible!” – Greg G. (2015 Epic Endurance Camp)

Santa Ynez, CA

Santa Ynez is a small town located in Santa Barbara County, near the Los Padres National Forest and just inland from the coast of the Pacific Ocean.  Quiet roads, awesome trails, and beautiful scenery await the cyclists and mountain bikers who are ready ride!  The area is not only famous for its abundant riding routes, but is well known for great restaurants, galleries, country inns and exceptional wine tasting rooms. Rides carry you through some of the Santa Ynez Valley’s finest roads, described by Chris Carmichael as “spectacular” and “some of the best riding in North America.”  You will pass through rolling terrain, along streams, through vineyards and horse farms.

Day Schedule
Wednesda This arrival and check in day at CTS Santa Ynez.  After dropping off your bike and a brief check-in process, you’ll join the CTS coaching staff and fellow riders for a gourmet dinner and a preview of the week ahead.  If you’d like to add any lab testing or a bike fit to your camp, it’s best to arrive before 2 pm on this day.  Registration is from 3 to 5:30 pm at our office in Santa Ynez.
Thursday Today’s endurance ride focuses on group riding skills as we head towards Jalama Beach.  Many consider the ride to Jalama to be the most beautiful in the area, and the views as you crest the final rise to the coast are amazing.  This is a technically challenging route with a deceptive amount of climbing, and as part of the Epic Endurance camp we’ll be adding extra miles and extra climbs on to the normal Jalama route.   As with all the days, we’ll be right around 100 miles of total riding today, and there is lots of riding to come!Lunch and power data review is at CTS, and there is the option for a sports massage.
Friday The endurance ride today focuses on long miles with lots of hills.  We’ll spend the day riding the canyons of the Santa Ynez Valley.  Lots of climbing and descending await as we spin through the vineyards, ranchland and mountains of California’s Central Coast. After lunch and reviewing the morning’s ride data you’ll again have the option for massage, followed by a group dinner.
Saturday We save the hardest ride for last at Epic Endurance Camp – Figueroa Mountain!  The technique fundamentals, pacing strategies and nutritional tips you’ve learned the previous days will all help you conquer this extremely challenging “hors catégorie” climb.  It’s a mountain that has tested some of the world’s best cyclists, but our coaches and support staff will help you conquer it too.  But we’re not done after Figueroa.  We have lots of more miles to go through the challenging and scenic canyons of the Santa Ynez Valley.   A final data recall with coaches and one more group lunch caps off a great block of huge miles which will boost your fitness for any endurance challenge in the year to come.
