Camp Description

Nearly every cyclist we work with wants to improve his or her ability to ride uphill, and this three-and-a-half day camp is just what you need.

You will learn key techniques that help riders of all sizes and shapes excel when the road tips toward the sky. And since what goes up must come down, we will also help you develop the confidence and skills you need to descend quickly, safely, and efficiently.  Camps include a CTS Field Test and subsequent review of test data with the coaching staff to determine your most efficient climbing pace. Following days will include longer endurance rides focusing on climbing.

Our three and a half day Climbing Camps welcome riders of intermediate and advanced fitness and skill abilities. We highly recommend that your bicycle be equipped with compact gearing, or at least a 12-27 cassette for the terrain encountered at this camp.

Colorado Springs, CO

This Climbing Camp will be held out of the CTS headquarters location in Colorado.  Colorado Springs sits at an elevation of 6,035 feet and is home to Pikes Peak and the Garden of the Gods.


Day Schedule
Wednesday This arrival and check in day at CTS Colorado Springs.  After dropping of your bike and a brief check-in process, you’ll join the CTS coaching staff and fellow riders for a preview of the camp and brief presentation about proper nutrition practices to improve performance.  Following that we’ll have dinner together at once of our favorite restaurants. If you’d like to add any lab testing or a bike fit to your camp, it’s best to arrive before 2 pm on this day. Registration is from 3:30 to 5:00 pm at our office in Colorado Springs..
Thursday We start camp with a bike handling skills session and the CTS Field Test.  Even the best pros spend time working on their skills and there is plenty to learn from the coaches leading and demonstrating the drills.  The CTS field test you’ll tackle next will allow you to establish training ranges for the rest of camp.   After lunch at the CTS office, the coaches will provide individual feedback on your Field Test results.  The afternoon ride is a skill development ride covering momentum and descending technique with the stunning backdrop of the Garden of the Gods.
Friday Friday morning’s ride continues the focus on climbing and descending with a set of Climbing Repeat intervals. You’ll use power ranges established by the field test to climb at an appropriate intensity.  Don’t worry, if you don’t already have a powermeter, we have one for you to use as part of the camp!   After lunch and reviewing the morning’s ride data, we’ll discuss how to get the most out of riding with a power meter.The day’s second ride is an easier session that focuses on bike handling and cornering technique. We end the day with a fun group dinner.
Saturday We save the hardest ride for last at Climbing Camp. This will be a longer ride of 3.5-4 hours with as many vertical feet of climbing we can get in to one ride. The technique fundamentals, pacing strategies and nutritional tips you’ve learned the previous days will all help you conquer this challenging course. And while this ride will challenge your legs and resolve, you will also enjoy a spectacular ride through the Front Range of the Colorado mountains. Camp concludes after lunch and a review of your power meter data from the ride and a Q and A session with the coaches.

A non-refundable $300deposit is due at time of registration. The remaining balance is due 30 days prior to the camp and will be billed automatically. The credit card information used for your deposit will be billed unless otherwise arranged with the CTS accounting department.

We recommend you arrive by Wednesday, June 04, 2014 . Camp registration will be from 3:00-5:00 PM Wednesday, June 04, 2014 . You must provide your own transportation. The conclusion of the camp will be Saturday, June 07, 2014.

Bike Transport and Assembly

If you are shipping your bike, please make sure it arrives at CTS or your hotel by Wednesday, June 04, 2014.

If you wish to ship your bike, we recommend using  They provide door to door pick/up and delivery of your bike.  You will need to pack your bike, or have it packed for you.  We will take care of packing your bike before it departs.

The Colorado Springs Airport is a 25-minute drive from our office.

Denver International Airport is approximately 90 minutes from Colorado Springs. If you choose to fly in to Denver we suggest you rent a car or take the Colorado Springs Shuttle.

What to Bring

Items to pack for any of our cycling camps:

  • Bicycle: Clean, tuned and ready to ride
  • Gearing: Your bike should have a 12-27 cassette and/or a compact crankset.
  • Helmet
  • Jerseys: at least 4 (short and or long sleeve)
  • Shorts: at least 4 pair
  • Wind Vest
  • Baselayer : 1 or 2 lightweight
  • Rain Jacket
  • Arm Warmers
  • Socks
  • Cycling gloves: short finger
  • Cycling Shoes/pedals (carry these with you if traveling by plane)
  • Eyewear/sunglasses
  • Chamois cream
  • Small tote or backpack for anything you wish to keep in support vehicles.
  • Heart Rate Monitor and/or Power Meter (Power Tap or SRM or other)
  • Sunscreen
  • Toiletries for clean up between rides.

Items to add just in case

  • Light jacket
  • Medium weight jacket
  • Long sleeve and/or thermal jersey
  • Long finger gloves
  • Shoe covers/booties
  • Leg or knee warmers or light tights

Other items to consider:

  • 12-27 or 12-25 cassette – If you are not accustomed to climbing, are a beginner cyclists or are attending a climbing camp.
  • Bottles/mix/food – if you will be arriving before a camp begins or remaining afterward, and wish to ride, please bring what food/drink supplies you will need for your riding.

We will have sport drinks, food, spare tubes/tires, etc in our follow vehicles.  Each day we will prepare waterbottles for your bike using Bonk Breaker Nutrition and will provide you with sports nutrition products for use during the camp.

Items to pack for High-Altitude Ultrarunning Camp:

Weather along the Front Range is notorious for changing in an instant. Please keep track of the weather forecast and bring appropriate clothing. This camp is fully supported with Bonk Breaker and Carb Boom nutrition products. If you require something different, please bring it! Be prepared to run unsupported for up to 3 hours. The following items are a sample list of what you will need

  • Trail running shoes (duh)
  • Hat
  • Sunscreen
  • Small day bag or drop bag
  • Hydration system (handheld bottles or hydration pack)
